Myths and Truths: Diabetes

Myth #1

Eating too many sweets is what causes Diabetes.
People are always saying things like “You’re drinking diabetes in a cup” or “Don’t eat too many of those cupcakes, you’ll develop diabetes”. This just simply isn’t true. Diabetes is caused by your body’s ability to create insulin.

Myth #2

Type 2 diabetes only occurs in those who are overweight.

Type 2 diabetes is more common in those who are overweight, have a family history of it, and are over the age of 40, but anyone can develop it, at any age and in any weight category.  Once way in which to avoid developing type 2 diabetes is to eat a healthy balanced diet and stay away from sugar sweetened beverages.

Myth #3

People with Diabetes cannot be overly active.

It is actually healthy for them to be as active as possible. If they become inactive it can cause major issues for them. If they get ill or end up bed-ridden for any reason, their sugar levels could drop so low that they would be unable to move or speak and may need help getting sugar into their system. If no one is around to help them in these instances, they could die. Staying as active as possible is safer for them, then staying immobile.

Myth #4

Diabetic women will die if they try to have a baby.

Medical Science has come a long with the outlook for a diabetic woman to have a baby. However it still comes with complications and giving birth to a healthy baby requires a great commitment and a complete diligence and change in lifestyle while the child grows within the womb. Times have changed from when a diabetic woman was doomed from having the chance to give birth, but nowadays things are a bit easier.
